What Is a Pizza Box Made Of?
Before anything else, the terms. People use “cardboard” and “corrugated” interchangeably, and the difference matters more than most people realize.
- Corrugated is the layered construction: a wavy fluted sheet sandwiched between two flat liners. That three-layer sandwich is what gives a pizza box its crush resistance: the waves act as columns, and the two flat faces spread the load.
- Cardboard is the umbrella word. Most pizza boxes are corrugated cardboard, but plain single-ply paperboard (one flat sheet, no waves) is also used for light loads like small snacks or mini pizzas.
- Paperboard is the specific name for that flat single-ply sheet.
So when someone asks “is a pizza box cardboard or paper?”, it’s paper, made into cardboard. The fibers are wood cellulose, usually a mix of new fiber from managed plantations and recovered fiber from recycled boxes. Corrugated is used because a pizza is the worst possible thing you can put in a box: hot, heavy in the center, dripping oil, and steaming. The fluted structure insulates against heat, the liners resist grease, and the whole assembly costs pennies.

There is no “correct” flute for every operation; the correct one is the thinnest flute that survives your handling. That’s the question to ask yourself, not “what does everyone use.”

- White (SBS-style coated board): bleached and often clay-coated. Its real advantage is print quality: logos and colors pop on white in a way they never will on brown. White boxes are the default for branded chains that treat the box as advertising.
- Recycled fiber: made from recovered boxes. On average, corrugated board in the US contains about 50% recycled fiber (OCC) and 50% new fiber from sustainably managed forests (Fibre Box Association). Recycled content changes the sustainability story, but it also slightly softens strength and brightness, which is why it’s more common in liners than in flutes.

The Coating Decision: PE, PLA, Wax, or None
What the Coating Actually Does
Paper is cellulose, and cellulose is a sponge for two things every pizza produces: oil and steam. A coating is a barrier layer that stops grease from soaking through the board and keeps steam from turning the box soggy. Four options dominate:
- PE (polyethylene) lamination: the most common coating worldwide. A thin plastic film bonded to the inner board. Cheap, effective, completely leak-proof for oil.
- PLA lamination: a plant-based (usually corn-starch) polymer that does the same job but is designed to break down in industrial composting, where PE will not.
- Wax: the old-school barrier. Works, but waxed board is the hardest to recycle of the group and rarely used for new production.
- None: some boxes rely on high grammage and dense board alone, accepting that heavy grease will eventually stain through. Common in kraft boxes where a little oil bloom is acceptable.
The Recycling Paradox: Grease, Coatings, and the 10% Rule
Here is where the popular wisdom and the data split. The old story, that “greasy pizza boxes can’t be recycled,” is half outdated. The paper industry’s own studies found that corrugated pizza boxes in the recycling stream carry about 1–2% grease by weight on average, and fiber quality only degrades meaningfully above roughly 10%, far above typical usage (Trellis / WestRock study, 2021; Waste Dive, 2022). PLA wins the narrative (compostable, plant-based, certified under BPI/DIN-style schemes) but costs more, and only composts where industrial composting facilities actually exist, which is still a minority of collection areas.
None is the honest minimum: fully recyclable, lowest cost, but you accept visible grease staining and occasional soak-through on heavy orders.

The trend is real: foodservice buyers are pushing the coating question hard, and suppliers are responding with PLA and coating-free alternatives alongside standard PE. Microwave and Oven Boundaries
One recurring consumer question deserves a straight answer: pizza boxes are microwave-safe for short reheats in most cases. The box won’t ignite in 60–90 seconds, and any coating must be food-contact compliant. The oven is a different story.

There is no “food-grade cardboard” certification for paper itself. What actually exists, and what you should ask for instead, is a stack of four different documents:
- Material compliance declarations: for the US market, FDA 21 CFR compliance statements covering food-contact paper and coatings; for Europe, EU 10/2011 migration test reports. These answer “is the material legal to touch food.”
- Factory system certifications: SQF, BRC, or ISO 9001/14001. These answer “is the plant clean and controlled enough to manufacture food packaging.” This is the closest thing to “food grade” that actually exists.
- Compostability certifications: BPI (US) or DIN (EU) for any box marketed as compostable.
- Market-specific requirements: LFGB (Germany) and other national rules that some importers and chains specifically demand.
Four rules of thumb when a supplier claims “food grade”:
- Ask for the document, not the adjective. A compliance statement or test report has a date, a standard number, and an issuer; “we’re food grade” has none.
- Don’t accept one market’s certification as proof for another. FDA compliance is not LFGB compliance, and neither is a compostability claim.
- Put the leak-proof and grease-resistance promises in writing, in the order confirmation, not just in the sales chat.
- Ask the size-and-spec questions in the same breath: paper grade, grammage, flute type, coating, size tolerances, and ink (food-safe soy or water-based inks for printed boxes).
